Gannett-Planet Discover

By Jay Smallat 2:04 pm 5/12/2006

I haven't seen much from media and local search industry commentators, so I'm wondering if word got out very far: Gannett is buying Planet Discover, the integrated search services provider.

I can't say much about the deal because Scripps, my employer, has a business relationship with PD. I will say I like the Millard brothers and the team they've built at PD, and wish them the best in this new deal.

Update (10:55 a.m. 5/13): Peter Krasilovsky discusses the sale with PD President Terry Millard:

To Millard, the company’s acquisition by Gannett provides strong opportunity that could go beyond firing up Gannett’s 110 newspapers and, possibly, various TV and radio stations. He notes there are three kinds of content that Planet Discover is using: Traditional newspaper types of content; Yellow Pages content; and aggregations of content from users, calendars etc. The value of aggregation is just now getting appreciated, he says.
